Feature Friday: Tara Steeves

This week on Feature Friday we're talking with our NB boss lady Tara Steeves.

Tell us a bit about yourself.

My name is Tara Steeves and I’m the proud store manager of the Moncton store. Born and raised here in Riverview. I live on the outskirts of Moncton now. I’m one of the the ones that never left, but I love to travel. My husband and I also have a piece of land about 45 minutes out of town and we love to spend some time there.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I love staying healthy by going to the YMCA. I do lots of running, I’m a part of running groups and training groups. My husband and I are also a part of a vintage motorcycle group and we love to ride during the summer. We’re the proud owners of 16 motorcycles!

What do you love most about working at My Home Mercantile?

Obviously, working for a young entrepreneur really attracted me from the beginning. My father had a small business when I was growing up. I love the combination of a local clothing line paired with unique and various makers from all over Canada. It’s a very different type of store - we’re both a part of the community, and a supporter of the community. I love that we give back and that I can be a part of that. I love that we have so many regulars who come into the store, it really makes it feel like home.

What’s the best thing that happened to you this year?

The best thing that has happened in the last year is that Steve officially retired back in December of 2018 - which spiked our travel bug to go farther and longer than before! Time is short and not to be wasted!  With that said, we upgraded to a 5th wheel travel trailer from our original first tow behind.  Then we decided to go away for a month straight and started planning!  Our good old Maritime winters made the time and place an easy decision - South please!! So Florida it is, for the whole month this March and we're really looking forward to it.

What always makes you laugh?

My husband, to be honest. He’s my happy, jolly, go-lucky guy. He’s just the most positive person I know. He exhumes happiness and joy. He’ll be a clown without even thinking of it. He can always make me laugh or make me feel better.

What’s your favourite childhood memory?

Being on the back of the motorcycle with my dad. Every time I heard the sound of the engine, I would run to grab my gear to head out for a drive with him. I loved it, still do. My dad was a motorcycle mechanic. When I came home from the hospital after being born, the first thing he did was take a picture with me on the motorcycle.

Where do you like to go out and eat?

I love local and family owned restaurants. Rosano’s is our number one spot. We also love to go outside at the Pumphouse in the summer. And I can’t leave out Homestead Restaurant in Riverview - it’s like going to a gramma’s house for dinner. Every meal comes out with love.
