HOME On Native Land - Indigenous Peoples Day 2022
Posted on July 14 2024
The new collaborative Home on Native Land design is not only a very important statement, it's symbolic of the evolution of a brand. My Home Apparel began 7 years ago as a company rooted in giving back to Canadians and celebrating Canada, the place we call HOME. Around the same time was the Canada 150 anniversary, and My Home Apparel was one of the few Canadian Made brands selling the official merchandise for the years events. Many of our products that launched around this time were dated: est. 1867.
Shortly afterwards, our Canada HOME design was replaced with an updated, dateless version - one of the classic HOME logos we still make today. Since some of these initial launches, we have had some version of the “HOME and Native Land” design - words instantly recognizable from the Canadian national anthem.
In the last 7 years, our company has grown, changed, and evolved continuously - and so has this land now known as Canada. Our entire staff, along with many of you, have dedicated time to reflect, learn and educate ourselves on Indigenous history and Turtle Island. We are listening and learning constantly about Truth and Reconciliation, and the territory that our company and our home exists on.
As we change our understanding and our actions to continue to support and celebrate our home and our communities in the best ways we can - we will continue to grow and change. Through courses, reports, lessons and discussions with Indigenous educators, neighbours, and community members - we came to feel strongly that a new "Home ON Native Land" design was required.
We are proud to partner with Annie Martin (from Millbrook First Nation in Mi'kma'ki, now at home in Epekwitk (PEI)) to create this new, important design.
We hope this shirt not only portrays an important message about the land we live on, but also the evolution and growth of My Home Apparel and our love for our HOME.
“I’m proud to collaborate with MHA and see my artwork come to life in this shirt - which is so much more than just a shirt. Its message is strong, and it tells an important truth about the story of the land on which we all live. I hope anyone who wears this shirt feels the meaning, growth, and positive intention that was poured in the creation of it. Wela’lioq to My Home Apparel for listening, learning and your allyship.”
